ECT (Edge Crush Test, defined by TAPPI T-811) measures how much force a corrugated board resists on its edge before crushing. It predicts real-world stacking strength and transit crush better than burst strength — which is why engineered packaging specs quote ECT, not Mullen. The number means nothing without its standard: an "ECT" figure with no standard attached is a guess, not a spec. ECT figures are quoted in pounds per inch, and comparable numbers only exist when the same standard, the same test speed, and the same conditioning were used — a supplier who cannot name those details is quoting decoration, not data.

Drop Tests: How Standards Simulate the Abuse Your Box Faces
ISTA defines the drop-test regimes: 1A is a basic integrity screen, 2A adds partial simulation of courier handling, 3A replicates real parcel-carrier environments — sorting machines, stacking, vibration. For e-commerce, 3A is the level that matters. A drop-test claim is only meaningful when it names the standard level it was run to. Each step up in level adds real-world variables, so a higher level is not automatically "better" — it is more honest about the environment the parcel actually travels through.
When a supplier shares a test report, check three things: which ISTA level it ran, what pass criteria were set, and whether the report is from a certified lab or an internal setup. Both can be honest — the standard named is what makes the claim comparable. Reports also differ in what they certify: a single drop test of one sample is a data point; a protocol run across a batch with defined pass criteria is a specification. Ask which one you are looking at.

What Actually Moves the Number: Flute, Liner, Moisture
Flute. B flute is the print-friendly all-rounder; E flute trades a little cushion for a flatter printing surface; double-wall (BC) is the heavy-duty answer. The right flute is chosen by product weight, not preference — the geometry of the core decides how much shock the board can absorb before the liner sees it. The flute also sets collapse behaviour: a stiffer flute resists crushing but transfers more shock to the product, which is why cushioning decisions cannot be separated from flute choice.
Liner. Liner grammage drives both strength and print surface. Heavier liner means stronger board and better ink holdout, at a predictable cost step — but the exact trade-off should be specified for your load, not assumed. Print quality and crush resistance are purchased together, on the same sheet. Coated liners change the equation further: they lift print quality and ink holdout, and they can slightly alter how the board handles humidity — a finishing decision with structural side effects.
Moisture. Moisture is the silent variable in board strength — humid storage can meaningfully reduce edge crush. Ask about storage conditions, not just the number on the spec sheet, because a rating measured at 50% humidity is not the same board at 80%.
Strength is designed, then protected. Both halves matter.
